Mold / Mildew Detecting Dog

We use Ally, a well-known (from television and magazines) lady Labrador retriever who has been trained to detect mold and mildew infestation in buildings and indicate the exact location of the infestation. Ally was trained using pure cultures from the eleven types of mold and mildew most commonly found in buildings (based on findings from the Frauenhofer Institute). Together with her equally well-known handler, who herself is an accredited expert on building damage and defects, they form an extremely effective team.

Advantages

A trained mold sniffing dog has an important advantage when compared to more common methods of mold detection (for instance, the testing of air in a room suspected to be infested with mold), due to its ability to point out the exact spot where the mold infestation has taken root. The results of an inspection by the trained dog are immediately available, without any waiting period which is usually necessary when growing cultures, for example.

Basically, the dog can be used anytime a mold infestation is suspected. This may be the case when symptoms typical of mold infestation exist, but the actual cause is unknown. The same applies to cases where smells can't be localized; in this case Ally can always find the origin of the smell.

The dog can also be helpful in determining whether visible damage is actually mold or something completely different. It can sometimes take weeks to determine the culprit when taking a sample and analyzing it using normal techniques. When using the mold detecting dog, the results are available in a moment's notice and you can take immediate action!
